REPORTS : Evaluation of groundwater flux through bottom sediments of Otsego Lake , 1999
نویسنده
چکیده
Seepage meters were constructed to measure the influx of groundwater in Otsego Lake (Donnelly, 1999; after Lee, 1977). The meters were placed at the bottom of the lake to indicate the amount of water entering or leaving the lake through bottom sediments. Balloons attached to the meters were used to capture groundwater and samples were tested for chloride ion levels to ascertain whether it was groundwater. Results show that there is a flow of groundwater into Otsego Lake at some study sites, and that, in the areas monitored, the seepage was greatest near shore. Also, the chloride levels of the water collected were higher than those in lake water samples. However, seepage was highly variable. Further research is needed to determine whether the variation is due to precipitation events or to other changing factors, such as the heterogeneous nature of the glacially modified local geology, or water current combined with leakage in the seepage meters.

Physical Controls on Methane Ebullition from Reservoirs and Lakes
Understanding the nature and extent of methane production and flux in aquatic sediments has important geochemical, geotechnical, and global climate change implications. Quantifying these processes is difficult, because much of the methane flux in shallow sediments occurs via ebullition (bubbling). Direct observation of bubble formation is not possible, and bubbling is episodic and dependent upo...
متن کاملMonitoring of fecal coliform levels in Otsego Lake and its watershed
Throughout Otsego Lake's watershed, most residents rely on septic tanks as a source of wastewater disposal. Along the northwest shore of the lake, there are many houses situated closely together. Ground water degradation has occurred in many areas having high densities of septic tanks systems, with the degradation exemplified by high concentrations of nitrates, bacteria and other contaminants (...
متن کاملFluorometric analysis of chlorophyll a as a representation of phytoplankton in phosphorus - limited media
Trends in data from recent years show movement toward eutrophication in Otsego Lake; these include increasing total phosphorus and resultant increasing chlorophyll a concentrations, decreasing Secchi transparency readings and decreasing hypolimnetic oxygen concentrations(Harman et al., 1997). The increase in phosphorus has triggered the changes in chlorophyll a, Secchi transparency, and dissolv...
متن کاملPhosphorus flux from bottom sediments in Lake Eucha, Oklahoma.
Phosphorus inputs into reservoirs include external sources from the watershed and internal sources from the reservoir bottom sediments. This study quantified sediment P flux in Lake Eucha, northeastern Oklahoma, USA, and evaluated the effectiveness of chemical treatment to reduce sediment P flux. Six intact sediment-water columns were collected from three sites in Lake Eucha near the reservoir ...
متن کاملAn inventory of herbivorous insects associated with Eurasian milfoil in Otsego Lake , summer 1999
Earlier studies have indicated that Eurasian milfoil is not as large a problem in Otsego Lake as in other water bodies (Minor, 1997). It has been hypothesized that Acentria ephemerella. present in Otsego Lake, controls Eurasian milfoil (Merrifield and Hannan, 1988). In its larval stage Acentria grazes on milfoil, hindering its growth. In the summer of 1997 Miner (1998) studied meroplankton foun...
